What is Burnout?
Burnout is a very real phenomenon, characterized by the feeling of overwhelming emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. It is often caused by prolonged stress that has not been managed effectively and can be influenced by many factors such as a lack of control, unclear expectations, and dysfunctional workplace dynamics. Despite being a recognised syndrome by the World Health Organization, burnout is often wrongly perceived as laziness or procrastination, overlooking the underlying impact on their health.
My experience with burnout?
As a student with ambitious goals, I often found myself trapped in a cycle of intense study sessions, pushing my brain to the point of exhaustion, only to be left unable to focus for the following week. Initially blaming it on a lack of discipline or motivation, I would push myself even more, entering a vicious cycle. Eventually, this led to a decline in motivation and enjoyment in my pursuits. In hindsight, a more sustainable study routine prioritizing my well-being alongside my goals would have been a healthier approach, allowing me to stay clear of burnout.
What can we do about it?
To be honest, everyone responds differently to burnout. Some can just ease off their work a little whereas others require a complete detox for a few weeks. The following are a few tips that helped me in overcoming my burnout, and hopefully, they prove helpful to you as well.
